Fondazione Prada is presenting a research programme into the Chicago art scene that flourished in the aftermath of World War II. It is split into three exhibitions – Leon Golub, H. C. Westermann and Famous Artists from Chicago. 1965-1975 – with Gemano Celant curating all three as a single project.
Through these exhibitions, Fondazione Prada is exploring two generations of artists (the Monster Roster and Chicago Imagists) active around the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, a long way from the main art centres of the era. With painting imbued with political endeavour, figurative narrative and radical graphics, these artists were opposed to abstract expressionism and minimalism, instead pre-empting the art of the 1980s and 1990s, from graffiti to street art.
Fondazione Prada – Largo Isarco 2, Milan – from 20 October 2017 to 15 January 2018.
