SEED is the eleventh chapter in Women’s Tales, the series of short films created by renowned international contemporary directors commissioned by Miu Miu to celebrate femininity in the 21st century.
Directed by the Japanese director Naomi Kawase, SEED tells the story of a girl who journeys from Nara’s wild nature to the chaos of Tokyo. Along the way, the heroine, played by the actress Sakura Ando, meets a boy who offers her the gift of an apple, which she in turn gives to a homeless man, who proffers her a soft piece of chiffon fabric in exchange. Moving like a tree that sways in the wind, the girl expresses a spirit that secretly runs through these objects and places, pulsating with life.
The work also offers a sentimental portrait of Asian femininity, which the director defines as “primitive, primal and erotic at the same time”.
