‘Let’s not be afraid of the words: the autumn 2017 precollection of the Italian label is a marvel. This Monday, on the floor of the Parisian boutique Place Beauvau, we want to undress the mannequins of wood and put on the field their looks of college girls of the 1940s. It’s pure Miu Miu, playful, smart, ultra-feminine, inspired and inspiring.’

‘Miuccia Prada often roots her Miu Miu collections in the Forties, and she spiked her pre-fall with Fifties varsity references and quirky embellishments. A diverse cast of mannequins — so realistic you almost expected them to blink — ringed the walls of the Italian brand’s Paris boutique, which were painted by a graffiti artist into archetypical cityscapes: one room for day; the other for night. The clothes were as vivid and charming as the presentation — a mash-up of butch shapes and daintier ones all zhuzhed up with demonstrative collars that played over shoulders and brooch-like embroideries of swallows, flowers, motorcycles and numbers.’

‘Serving some 1940s glamour the mannequins look down on you as you peruse them. Taunting you. You think you could do better punk? You’ll never be this still, this glam, and this decked out in Miu Miu. So you can have a seat. And they’re right, but you’ve got something they don’t. The ability to move. So whilst they stand still, mocking you, you have your chance to grab their garms and make a speedy exit with them. I have particularly got my eye on the fur lined, American-style bomber jackets, the peach flavoured Campino coloured fur coats and (of course) the pearls. Classy and sassy, and a little bit nasty. All sides of a woman. Which only begs the question, Mother Miuccia what is the next challenge?’

‘Glam plus sport, with a 1940s flavour. Miu Miu’s equation for Pre-fall 2017 […] playfully and successfully combines baseball style and a Hollywood mood. American-style bomber jackets are the symbolic garment, the silhouettes of the clothes are elusive and bewitching, and femme-fatale fur is omnipresent. Between the four walls painted to depict a suburban landscape by a series of up-and-coming artists, the avant-garde brand in the Prada group has produced a narrative where glam rules supreme.’
