Violetta, the beautiful main character from ‘La Traviata’, will be dressed in Miu Miu for Alice Rohrwacher’s revolutionary interpretation of Verdi’s opera. “Her dress is in layers, made from a combination of various dresses, and with it the character changes visibly as the story progresses, in parallel with the metamorphosis of the set design”.
Violetta is depicted by Alice Rohrwacher as a fragile beauty burning with passion, “a Marilyn Monroe sung with verses from Pier Paolo Pasolini”, a troubled and suffering teenager who from the purity of her country upbringing spirals precipitously into the depths of the luxury of Paris (“that teeming desert called Paris”) and love.
“My Traviata”, Rohrwacher explained, “is buried in abstraction. Everything forms part of the heroine’s imagination. There are some concrete references to reality, but they are set within her inner being.”
After its premiere at the Teatro Valli in Reggio Emilia, Alice Rohrwacher’s ‘La Traviata’ will be performed at a selection of major theatres across northern Italy:
