The Protocol of the XXXVI America’s Cup, for which Luna Rossa is Challenger of Record, has been presented in Auckland, New Zealand. The Protocol contains the new rules under which the oldest, most prestigious and most highly sought-after trophy in the history of sport will be contested.
The biggest news is the return to monohull boats (ed.: the last two contests have been fought with catamarans) and the introduction of the new AC75 class: 75’ (approx. 23 metre) high-performance monohulls, suitable for match racing (ed.: two-boat races) and close competition.
The preliminary regattas of the 36th America’s Cup will be held in the second half of 2019 (two events) and throughout 2020 (three events) in locations yet to be decided, and will conclude with the Christmas Race in Auckland from 10-20 December 2020.
The Challenger Selection Series will take place in January and February 2021, again in Auckland, and the winner will compete against the holders of the trophy, Emirates Team New Zealand, in the final Match, to be held in March 2021.
Prada Group has also been awarded the title of ‘Title and Presenting Sponsor’ for the entirety of the 36th America’s Cup.
