Pedro Almodóvar stars in Auteur, the latest chapter in the 365 project, showcasing the Fall/Winter 2017 Prada menswear collection.
Embodying iconoclasm across all disciplines, the Spanish director is universally recognised as a genuine master of contemporary cinema, thanks to his unmistakable creative imprint, distinct aesthetic and unique point of view.
Almodóvar is framed in a series of widescreen shots amongst the idealised interior of the room that houses Prada’s fashion shows, in photos loaded with an implied narrative and their own backstory, like stills from a film that has never been made.
Here Almodóvar also draws on his experience as an actor to conjure an imaginary version of himself, playing the role of the director with tongue firmly in cheek, unsure before Willy Vanderperre’s camera, apparently captured off guard in a domestic setting; perceptions which are then scrambled as the Prada showspace reveals itself, shattering our suspension of disbelief. What is real and what is make-believe? And can that make-believe be a kind of reality too?
